Playa Negra Costa Rica is located south of Playa Avellana and is a darker-colored beach with rocky outcrops. Surfers will find a world-class right break that barrels. While at the northern side, Playa Avellana — which is a beach of white sand — surfers will find the powerful and open-faced right called Little Hawaii. Beach Break barrels at low tide.

There are powerful riptides at Playa Negra & Avellana and inexperienced swimmers need to be aware that these riptides can carry a swimmer to sea at a about 10kmh (6mph). It's impossible to swim back directly to shore.
