Pavones Costa Rica is about 15-km (9 mi) south of Zancudo and is legendary among surfers. It's also Costa Rica's most southern point. Once you have arrived in Golfito and start heading south, you will distinctly note that you have left the tourist grid.
The reason to travel to Pavones is because of the beaches, which are sandy and wide and for the laid-back atmosphere. The beaches around Pavones are lined with palms. The coastal hills are covered with rain forest — providing stunning views. But, most importantly, this surf destination has the longest left-hand break in the world.
Formerly an off-the-beaten-track travel destination, Pavones is slowly being transformed into a travel destination offering modern amenities, including hotels, restaurants and activities. Outside of surf season, this is still a tranquil destination. Because it's so tranquil, it's striking that such a number of accommodation options are available. If you enjoy laid-back tranquil atmospheres where the streets are palm lined and roads are not yet paved, Pavones might be the spot for you. It's hard to get to Pavones, however, the genuine authentic character of the area warrants the trip for those who consider themselves intrepid.
Pavones is commonly used to refer to two beaches — Playas Rio Claro de Pavones and Punta Banco. The latter is located about 6-km (3.8 mi) south. The paved road comes to a dead end in Rio Claro. Travelers will need to cross the Rio Claro and find a road to the east which continues to Punta Banco.
Getting to Pavones can be done by bus which departs form Golfito twice a day. It's reasonably priced at about US$2. A 4WD taxi will charge about US$50 to drive from Golfito to Pavones.
