Baru is notable because it is in the biological corridor called the Path of the Tapir.

Whale Marine National Park is located south of Uvita and occupies the beachfront and ocean. Whales migrate through these waters from December through March, hence the park's name.

From May to November, the Olive Ridley turtle nests on the beaches of this national park.
