Costa Rica Tropical rainforest and marine animals make Costa Rica unique because there is not one place in the world because there are so many types of habitats found in such a small area. There are 615 species of animals in Costa Rica which makes this country a nature lovers dream destination. I am not an expert and have done some research for reference.

Wildlife in Costa Rica

Wildlife in Costa Rica is as follows:

  • Birds: One of the top reasons to visit Costa Rica is for the world-famous bird watching. There are about 850 species of birds in Costa Rica. This includes 50 species of humming birds, ten species of trogons, including the resplendent quetzal.
  • Mammals: There are 200 species of mammals in Costa Rica; over half are bats. Hunting has nearly put most large land mammals in Central America into extinction, but the numbers found in the national parks of Costa Rica are starting to recover. There are four species of monkeys, two species of sloths, three species of anteaters, two species of armadillos, coatis, jaguars, peccaries. On the water side, there are dozens of species of whales and dolphins, and the endangered manatee.
  • Reptiles: There are over 220 species of reptiles in Costa Rica and more than half of these are snakes. There are crocodiles, lizards including the famous Jesus Christ lizard known for running across water, and five species of sea turtles .
  • Amphibians: Costa Rica has 160 species of amphibians, including a tiny colorful poison-dart frog. Natives used poison from frogs to dip the tips of hunting arrows in.
  • Insects: More than 35,000 species of insects have been recorded in Costa Rica. Costa Rica has 10% of the world's butterflies and moths.
  • Fish: There are several species of interest to fishermen. The Pacific Blue Marlin, Black Marlin, Pacific Sailfish, Dorado, Snapper, Yellowfin Tuna and Roosterfish are in season from April to November. The Yellowfin Tuna and Black Marlin have a more limited season, but the others can be caught year round. There are 180 species of freshwater fish including rainbow trout, white-eye, freshwater & Mazatlan sole.

Costa Rica ecotourism is dynamic and interesting because of the flora and fauna. Imagine a monkey swinging past you as you walk down a trail. Continue up the trail, and you'll see bats on the under side of the tree. A little further and there are more monkeys. Finally, you emerge at a beautiful sandy beach. You're adventure through the tropical jungle was mesmerizing and then, it's topped off with a swim in the warm waters of the Pacific Ocean. Dominical beach

Dominical Costa Rica is a laid back surfer's destination with a beautiful long beach. Dominical is south of Jaco and north of Corcovado National Park. It makes a great pit stop if you're heading to Corcovado.

Although it's not a high-end tourist destination, Dominical is charming and has sufficient services for the adventurous travelers. Be sure to try the fresh bakery.

Corcovado coastline

Corcovado National Park is located in the Osa Peninsula and is a bit off-the-beaten path. However, it's a fascinating destination and worth the effort to visit.
