  • Las Sirena Hotel is located in Quepos and has 14 air-conditioned rooms with fridges. The hotel is located in the center of Quepos and offers pool, bar, laundry services, telephone & television.
  • Vista Serena is a clean, comfortable and affordable hostel in Manuel Antonio National Park. There's a BBQ, tv lounge and veranda with hammocks. There are dorms and apartment-style private rooms that are very clean.

Central Valley & Highlands

  • Hotel Pacande is in Alajuela with welcoming owners. It's reasonably priced and breakfast is included.
  • Hotel Martino Resort & Spa in La Garita is an option to stay at after visiting Zoo Ave.
  • Villa Blanca is located in the Los Angeles Cloud Forest Reserve and offers a restaurant, 30 bungalows with refrigerators, bathtubs and fireplaces.
  • Poás Volcano Lodge was damaged during and earthquake and has four junior suite rooms in good condition.
  • Finca Rosa Blanca is just outside Santa Barbara and isn't far from Barva. This is a coffee plantation with beautiful suites, jacuzzi tubs, mini bars, verandas and valley views.

Northern Peninsula de Nicoya

  • Hotel Mamiri is located minutes form the beach. It has 7 rooms with private bath, hot water ceiling fan and safety box. There's a restaurant.
  • Laguna del Cocodrilo is a lagoon-facing hotel with 10 rooms, 2 junior suites and 1 studio. Each room has a bath with hot water, air conditioning, tv and some have fridges.

  • Seuño del Mar is also nearby Playa Langosta. It has six rooms with open-air garden showers and wrap around window with sea views. Breakfast is included in price. There's a private beach access.

  • Harbor Reef Surf Resort are located on Playas Pelada and Guinoes. These rooms have private bath, air conditioning, hot water and fridges.
  • Casa Romantica is next to Playa Guiones and has six rooms with private bath. There are gardens and pool with private beach access. A small restaurant features international cuisine and there are yoga classes and massage services.
  • Hotel Belvedere is in Samara which is 35-km (22 mi) south of Nosara. This hotel has 10 rooms with hot water baths, cable tv, terraces. There are two larger bungalows with kitchenette. There's a pool and whirlpool.
  • Casa del Mar is in Samara and has 17 clean comfortable rooms. Some are air-conditioned while others have fans. Most have private hot-water baths. There are fridges for rent.

Hotels in the southern Peninsula of Nicoya, Costa Rica

  • Hotel Lys Montezuma is located on the beach and is a budget accommodation.
  • Luna Lena is on the northern edge of Montezuma and has rooms at the edge of the forest. Very reasonably priced, guests have access to two kitchens, BBQ and lounge area. Rooms have a safe and fan, but baths are shared.
  • Hotel el Jardin is located 100m (330 ft) from the beach in Montezuma's center and has gardens, pool, jacuzzi, kitchens and private baths.
  • Tirmo Tropical is in Mal Pais and has cabins with hot showers, and onsite bar and restaurant, and has a short walk to the beach.
  • The Place in Mal Pais and is a guesthouse with air conditioning and private hot-water baths. There's a variety of price ranges from budget to moderate. Price is based on amenities.

Hotels in Monteverde & Santa Elena

  • Hotel Camino Verde is a clean budget hotel in a central location. There are hot showers.
  • Casa Tranquilo is west of the supermarket. It's a hostel with communal kitchen. Some rooms come with private baths while others have shared. Breakfast, Internet and Wi-fi are free.
  • Hotel Los Jardines has 9 rooms and 6 with private bath. There's a pool table and tv onsite. Rates are reasonable.
  • Arco Iris Ecolodge has cabins overlooking Santa Elena. There are private trails at the lodge. Rates range from budget to moderate.
  • Fonda Vela is located near the Monteverde reserve and has a restaurant,. There are very nice rooms with bathtubs, balconies and sitting rooms along with tvs.

Hotels in Liberia, Guanacaste & northwestern Costa Rica

  • Hotel Boyeros is in Liberia and has immaculate rooms with air conditioning and cable tv. There's a 24-hour restaurant, pool and water slide.
  • Rinconcito Lodge in Rincon de la Vieja is a budget option with attractive, rustic cabins and private showers. It also has inexpensive package deals for local tours.
  • Hacienda Los Inocentes is near the Guanacaste National Park and is part ecolodge. There are 11 rooms with private bath and a pool onsite.
  • Ecoplaya in Bahia Salinas is on an isolated stretch of paradise. There are studio bungalows up to upscale luxury villas that can hold 8 people. There isn't much here except white-pristine sand beach. This resort offers snorkeling, kayaking, mountain biking and birding tours.

Hotels in Arenal & area

  • Termales del Bosque is a hotel & hot springs in Ciudad Quesada. It has several airy cottages and hot springs. The resort offers hiking, spa therapies and horseback riding.
  • Hotel Las Colinas is located in La Fortuna and has clean rooms with private bath, hot water, fan, air conditioning, cable tv, fridge, safety box and breakfast.
  • La Choza is also in La Fortuna and offers budget accommodation. The hotel has a well-stocked communal kitchen. It's reported to be very personable and consistently packed.
  • Pura Vida Hotel is located in La Fortuna and is clean and reasonably priced.
  • Luigi's Lodge is a moderately priced hotel in La Fortuna and has 20 rooms with a restaurant onsite.
  • Chachagua Rainforest Hotel is located 11-km (7 mi) south of La Fortuna and is on a private reserve. There are hiking trails and horseback options here. The 22 wooden cabins are comfortable with private baths and hot-water showers. There's a pool onsite.
  • Arenal Observatory Lodge is located on the ridge of the Arenal Volcano. This is the only legal place inside the park boundaries where visitors can find a bed. There's a pool and jacuzzi onsite and visitors can get guided hikes and breakfast. Rates are moderate plus.
  • Hummingbird Nest Bed & Breakfast is in El Castillo. This quaint two-bedroom B&B is located on a hill and has a jacuzzi where one can watch the volcano.
  • Arenal Lodge is in the Laguna de Arenal Area and has sweeping views of Arenal. There are 50 rooms and a restaurant, gift shop, 3 jacuzzis, pool, game room, outdoor playground, fitness room, steam bath, walking trails, Internet access, butterfly garden, and laundry service. Rates are moderate plus.

Hotels and lodges in the Peninsula de Osa & Golfo Dulce of Costa Rica

  • Ave de Mar is located on the Golfo Dulce near Corcovado National Park on 30 acres. The clean reasonably priced bungalows overlook the Pacific Ocean.
  • Jenetes de Osa is in Drake Bay on the beach and offers scuba diving in the waters of Cano Island. It has nine rooms with fans and rates include meals.
  • Danta Corcovado Lodge is located west of La Palma on the Los Patos road near Puerto Jimenez. The rooms are simply appointed but very nice. . The property consists of 12-hectares (30-acres).
  • Coloso de Mar is in Zancudo. It is simply furnished with palm-shaded wooden bungalows. There are screened windows, porches, safes and hot-water showers.
  • Rancho Burica is a hostel-style facility in Pavones and offers per person rates in a bungalow. Rates are dependent on the number of people sharing a bungalow. Well-run and clean, this is a surfer's choice!
  • Casa Siempre Domingo is also in Pavones and is a bed and breakfast on the hillside just south of Rio Claro. The rates include breakfast.
  • Hospedaje Eurotica is in Ciudad Neily and is located 2-km (1.4 mi) west of town. The rooms are basic, clean and at reasonable rates.

Accommodations in Tortuguero National Park, Costa Rica

  • Casa Marbella is a bed and breakfast in Tortuguero village. It has five clean bedrooms with clean spacious bathrooms.
  • Samoa Lodge is located just outside the village. It has 32 cabins with thatched roof and nice furnishings. There's a pool, sundeck and kayaks.
  • Laguna Lodge is also just outside the village and has 52 rooms with swimming pool and restaurant with bar.

Hotels on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica

  • Cabinas Iguana is in Playa Negra and has a wooden house that sleeps six people. There's a bungalow that sleeps three. Hot water and verandas with hammocks along an attractive pool with sundeck are the amenities.
  • Cabinas Algebra is in Playa Negra near Cahuita and offers kitchens, hot water and restaurant.
  • Cashew Hill Jungle Lodge is in Puerto Viejo and offers simple cabins with screens, mosquito nets, and hammocks.
  • Kaya's Place is in Puerto Viejo and has 26 rooms built in the Afro-Caribbean rustic style. There's Internet, parking, pool, views and a fun-loving host.
  • Hotel Cariblue is in Playa Cocoles just 1-km (0.6 mi) south of Puerto Viejo. There are 15 bungalows with private bath. Breakfast is included.

Hotels in the Northern Lowlands of Costa Rica

  • Laguna del Lagarto Lodge is one of the most isolated places in Costa Rica and is in a virgin rainforest just north of San Jose. It's on 500-hectares (1,250-acres) of land and is a bird watcher's paradise.
  • Cano Negro Natural Lodge is near the Nicaraguan border between La Cruz and Los Chiles. See their web site for map. It's in a remote location with good facilities including hot water showers, air conditioning and satellite tv. There's a restaurant, pool, game room, and jacuzzi.
  • Rancho Leona Sarapiqui River Lodge is on river of same name and offers a variety of rooms for kayakers, backpackers and whitewater rafters. There are hot-water showers, communal kitchen, pool and spa services.
  • Selva Verde Lodge is about 7-km (4 mi) west of Puerto Viejo de Sarapiqui and offers private bungalows that have hot-water showers, views and a hammock. Guided tours, butterfly garden, and walking trails through the grounds are the highlight here.
